How to Avoid Holiday Food Traps! Ends 12/28/10

This is sponsored content from BlogHer and The Laughing Cow.

'Tis the season of family parties, office parties and church parties. Parties with friends and lots and lots of awesome food! Here are some tips on how to go to the parties but stay in control of your eating.

Just like in everyday day life, it all comes down to planning and preparation. For example:

Before the party or event:

*Eat a small, healthy snack (like Laughing Cow Cheese) to keep from being so hungry at the party that you want to eat everything in sight.

*Drink water before the party to make you feel more full.

*Set a limit of how many appetizers you will eat and stick to it! Choose whatever you want to eat, but stick to your limit.

*You may want to consider bringing a healthy option to share with others at the party. Maybe something like this:

Fruit for Dessert Fruit Dip

1 container of fat free or light whipped topping, thawed
2 containers of fat free or light raspberry yogurt

Just mix together and serve with fresh fruit.

At the party:

*Use a small plate at the buffet. Fill up on fruits and vegetables.

*Limit alcohol. There are lots of calories in those drinks, but they can also hinder your judgment. Drink club soda or water instead.

*Don't waste your calories on "okay" tasting food. Eat smaller portions of what really satisfies you.

*Make the focus on other people and great conversation instead of just the food. Speaking as a "foodie" this is difficult for me!

I hope these tip can help you over these next few weeks that will be full of temptation! Most importantly....Have a great holiday and enjoy your friends and family!

What tip do you have to avoid overeating during the holidays? Leave a comment and you will be entered to win a $150 Visa gift card! Please keep your comments G-rated as any profanity or offensive content will automatically disqualify you from sweepstakes entry.

My tip is that even if I do some holiday baking, I take all of it to wherever/whatever I was baking it for. I don’t keep any of it at my house. I will still eat it if I take it to work or to a party, but at least I don’t have leftovers to come home to!

My tip is to make a daily workout chart and stick it on the fridge. That way it's right in front of me and I feel compelled to check off that day's exercices before I even attempt to open that door! My daughter uses it as well. We take turns on the treadmill while the coffee is brewing.

Eating during the holidays is not easy sometimes. To stay healthy I always eat a small meal before I go so I don’t feel like I have to pack it on at the party. I would rather do that and have everyone say how svelt I look instead of hiding the pie when I walk in. Happy Holidays.

Deb said...

I found that the time I overeat too much is at dinner (especially when there is pasta or potatoes), so I've taken to eating on a bread plate....seriously. It sounds like a tiny portion, but I fill the plate so I feel like I've got a whole plate full, and usually it's plenty of food. If I get hungry later, I have a healthy snack. Works well at parties too. I let myself have whatever I want as long as it can fit on one small size plate.

Unknown said...

For the holidays, I don’t indulge except for Christmas day. I promise myself that if I’m good all December, on Christmas I won’t be counting calories or feeling guilty for having an extra nut horn, or two. I also refuse to take home my mom’s leftovers because I know that’s just too much temptation to have in my refrigerator. While she pouts a bit, I know she understands my plight.

I also keep some low-calorie snacks on hand at work because there’s always cookie trays and goodies the weeks leading up to Christmas. From my lips straight to my hips and I swear it’s always worse during the holidays.

And when I'm Christmas shopping, I always bring along a bottle of water. The stores are hot and I know that I'd be tempted to stop for a soda or grab a quick fast-food snack..the water helps fill me up, keep me cool and it's much better for me than soda.

My strategy is to stay healthy all year round and indulge around the holiday season. I like to work out and I tend to eat clean year round, so when the holidays roll around I don't feel bad about sampling from the goody tray.

I try to really THINK about what I eat. I prefer to get the calories from foods than drinks so I watch out for that vice of mine: Starbucks!

Drink lots of water, eat healthy before going to the party, and what you cannot resist determine to avoid.

I participate in a cookie exchange. This helps so that I'm not making a bunch of different cookies for my family. They still get a variety and I'm not taste testing every batch that comes out of the oven.

I try to avoid the sweets, and stick to the fresh fruit and veggies. For any of the “bad” foods I indulge in, I limit portions to no more than a 1/2 cup.

When I am invited to someone's house for the holidays, I eat everything they labored over. I can revert to my normal routines and diet and exercise regimens right after the holidays and for the rest of the year.

My best tip is to eat a healthy meal before going to a party so that you won't eat so much unhealthy food at the party.

I eat veggies and exercise daily to balance out the extra sweets. If I overdo it at lunch, then I cut my calories at dinner.

I eat a healthy small meal before going to a party so that I don't pig out on the fatty foods! But, I do let myself have at least a taste of my favorites.

I always try to eat a healthy meal at home before I go out to a holiday party or get together. This way I won't be so hungry that I will eat too much junk food while I'm out.

I put the fork down. No really, if you are familiar with Paul McKenna you know what I'm talking about. You can anything you want. But you must put the fork/spoon down in between bites. Stop eating when you are feel full. It doesn't take long to feel full but you must give your stomach and brain time to coordinate. Any moderate exercise will help, too.

Love your Fruit Dip recipe! I will have to make that soon.

My favorite and most effective tip for watching your caloric intake during the holidays is to get up and workout FIRST thing in the morning. Before coffee. Before walking the dog. Before getting hubby and kids up for school/work. Do it and you'll be mindful all day long of what you're eating because you wont' want to blow that early morning exercise routine.

Look at everything being served, serve yourself primarily the healthy foods and very little of the unhealthy foods that way you have a variety and still fill up!
